How to hug your nervous system through soul-thrilling activities
Regenerate your nervous system
Hugging your nervous system through soul-thrilling activities is a choice you make every day, so why not do the soul-thrilling things that light you up while gently regulating your body's stress response? It's not just about temporary emotional highs, but about choosing experiences that regenerate your nervous system and bring joy, awe, and depth to your present moment without overwhelming it.
Intentional body movement
Any movement that puts you in the flow is free medicine! When you allow your body to move freely you're not just stretching your body but telling your nervous system that you trust the flow of free movement. Learn to dance messily in your living room without any structure, or go for a swim late at night and enjoy the calm of the moonlight. Or simply walking barefoot outside with intentional steps, quietly repeating healing affirmations along the way. Try finding one new way to intentionally increase your body movement to create calmness in your nervous system.
Freestyle your activities
Self-expression is always a great way to activate your rest and restore your natural state. Gardening and poetry are great ways to freestyle your activities in your spare time. I am the singer off-key with my chest type because it gives me the freedom to express myself, regardless of how anyone thinks it should sound.
Downshifting from stress to safety
Allow your soul to enjoy awe-inspiring moments. Creating enjoyable awe moments can be as simple as watching the sunrise or sunset in total silence, or reading a great poem that brings your soul calm and thrills. Awe moments are like water for your nervous system, providing a shift from stress to safety.
Becoming connected to your emotions
I know we humans are prone to wanting to fix every emotion we can, but allowing yourself to feel things through without fixing them will provide your nervous system with a hug of regulation. Suppressing your feelings creates tension in your body. So creating an emotional release valve in your life is essential! Screaming your soul into a pillow or simply laughing wildly will help you become more connected to your emotions. Please try one of these exercises, or something similar, next time you feel overwhelmed or like the world is on your shoulders. Remember, it's not chaos, it's regulation!
Connection is important
Human connection heals the nervous system. Having deep conversations with someone who gets you or simply having a great laughter session will automatically give your nervous system a huge hug. But if you're unable to connect with anyone around you on such a level, you can still provide yourself with such a connection with an arm wrapped around your torso and nerve-calming affirmations like "I am safe, I am here, I am home.
Reclaim your living experience
Hugging your nervous system (metaphorically speaking, of course) allows it to experience life's thrills. Your soul is a vessel that wants to feel joy, art, and movement. So find enjoyable activities that help you calm your nervous system and thrill your soul!.
